What Happens After a Pedestrian Is Fatally Struck by a Vehicle in a Residential Area?
When a pedestrian is fatally struck by a vehicle in a residential neighborhood, the process that follows typically involves both a police investigation and a review by a medical examiner. The medical examiner’s role is to determine the official cause of death and document any injuries, which becomes part of the formal record.
On the law enforcement side, investigators look at physical evidence from the scene: tire marks, vehicle damage, the point of impact, and the position of the person who was struck. Witness accounts are also gathered early, as memories tend to be sharpest in the hours immediately following a crash. In cases where a vehicle strikes a structure such as a garage, that too can provide clues about the vehicle’s speed and direction of travel before the collision occurred.
