Woodridge, IL (May 8, 2026) – Two people were injured following a crash involving a semi-truck and another vehicle early on Friday morning on southbound I-55 in Woodridge.
Emergency units responded to the scene at approximately 2:30 a.m. on May 8 after reports of a collision involving a semi-truck. Officials said the crash caused the semi-truck to catch fire along the southbound lanes of the interstate.

Traffic in the area was significantly affected, as all lanes were temporarily closed due to a fuel spill and roadway blockages related to the crash. Cleanup operations and emergency response activity continued for several hours following the incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Semi-Truck Fires on Interstates Often Cause Major Delays
Crashes involving semi-trucks can create significant roadway hazards when fuel spills or vehicle fires occur. Large commercial vehicles carry substantial amounts of fuel, and fires can spread quickly after a serious impact.
Emergency crews often need additional time to contain flames, clear debris, and remove damaged vehicles from travel lanes. Fuel spills may also require specialized cleanup to prevent slippery roadway conditions and environmental hazards.
Interstate closures are common during these incidents because investigators and cleanup crews need safe access to the scene. Traffic backups can become severe when all lanes are blocked during overnight or early morning travel periods.
