Why Are Pedestrian Crashes So Common at Night in Massachusetts?
Pedestrian crashes that happen after dark are among the most serious on record across Massachusetts. When visibility is reduced, drivers have less time to react to people crossing the road, and pedestrians are often harder to see, especially when street lighting is limited. This combination makes nighttime crossings on busy urban streets particularly risky.
Hope Avenue in Worcester runs through a densely populated area with steady vehicle traffic, even late in the evening. Roads like this one see frequent pedestrian activity from residents walking to nearby destinations. When someone attempts to cross outside of a marked crosswalk or in low light, the risk of a serious crash increases sharply.
Speed and driver attentiveness are also factors commonly reviewed after pedestrian accidents in urban settings. A vehicle traveling even at moderate speeds can cause fatal harm when it strikes a person on foot.
