Mattydale, NY (July 14, 2026) – A man in his early 20s was critically injured after his motorcycle collided with an SUV on East Molloy Road at Brown Avenue in Mattydale on Monday, July 13. The crash was reported at approximately 11:35 a.m.

The motorcyclist was heading east on East Molloy Road when an SUV turned left from Brown Avenue onto East Molloy Road, and the motorcycle struck the rear left door of the SUV. The rider was taken to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition.

Deputies indicated the SUV’s driver will be ticketed once the investigation is completed. No further details about the identities of those involved were included in the initial report on the accident.

The wreck remains under active review. We hope the injured rider makes a full recovery.

What Happens When a Turning Vehicle Cuts Off a Motorcyclist?

Left turns across or onto a roadway are among the most common causes of motorcycle crashes at intersections. A driver making a left turn must judge the speed and distance of oncoming traffic before completing the turn, and motorcycles can be harder to gauge accurately than larger vehicles. When a turning vehicle moves into the path of an oncoming motorcycle, the rider has only a fraction of a second to react before impact.

A motorcycle striking the side of a turning vehicle typically results in serious injury to the rider, since the collision occurs at a perpendicular or near-perpendicular angle with little warning. The side of a vehicle offers less energy absorption than the front, meaning the force of impact can transfer abruptly into the motorcycle and rider. Head and chest injuries are among the most common outcomes in this type of collision.

When investigators determine that a driver’s turning movement caused a crash, a traffic citation is issued once the full details of the collision have been documented. The ticketing process is typically completed after the investigation rather than at the scene, allowing deputies to review all available evidence before assigning fault.
