Anahola, HI (March 30, 2026) – A serious crash Sunday afternoon, March 29, left one man badly injured at an intersection in Anahola on Kauai. The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. at Kuhio Highway and Hokualele Road.

According to reports, a 61-year-old man driving a truck was turning right onto Hokualele Road when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a guardrail. A 46-year-old man riding in the cargo bed was thrown from the truck and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to a local hospital and later transported to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for further treatment.

Authorities said the driver left the scene and was later arrested. He faces several charges, including negligent injury, driving under the influence, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of a crash involving injury. Traffic was diverted while crews worked at the scene.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.

We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.

What Risks Are Linked to Riding in the Cargo Area of a Truck?

Routes connecting residential areas to main roads near Kuhio Highway and Hokualele Road can see varied traffic patterns. In Anahola, responders often focus on maintaining safety when serious crashes occur in these areas.

Riding in the cargo area of a truck can increase the risk of injury during a crash. Unlike passengers inside the cab, individuals in the back are not protected by seat belts or structural support. Sudden movements or impacts can lead to ejection from the vehicle.

Even low-speed incidents can result in serious harm when a person is unrestrained. Road conditions, turning movements, and driver actions all affect how stable a vehicle remains during travel.
