Fire and Utility Hazards After Serious Crashes
Serious crashes can create dangers beyond the initial impact. Vehicle fires, leaking fluids, broken glass, and damaged utility poles can make a crash scene unsafe for people nearby.
Downed wires are especially dangerous because they may still carry electricity. Anyone near the scene may need to stay back until trained crews confirm the area is safe.
When people are trapped inside a damaged vehicle, emergency units may need extra time to reach them safely. Fire, smoke, and electrical hazards can affect how crews approach the vehicle and remove injured occupants for medical care.
