What Makes Bicycle Collisions at Intersections So Serious?
Bicycle collisions at intersections can lead to serious harm because riders have little protection from vehicles or pavement. Even a lower-speed impact can cause head, shoulder, leg, or back injuries that may require medical care.
Intersections can also be difficult because drivers and bicyclists may be turning, crossing, or merging at the same time. Traffic signals, lane position, parked vehicles, and sight lines can all affect how quickly someone notices a bicycle nearby.
Early reports about bicycle accidents are usually brief, while medical needs are addressed first. Later updates may clarify the bicyclist’s direction of travel, whether a vehicle was involved, and how long the road was affected.
