Breckenridge, TX (April 2, 2026) – A four-vehicle crash on Wednesday afternoon led to a temporary closure of US 183 S about 15 miles south of Breckenridge.
The accident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. in a construction zone along the southbound lanes. Emergency units responded to the scene and shut down the highway in both directions while crews worked to assist those involved and clear the roadway.
Four people were taken to area hospitals following the crash. Two were flown by air ambulance to Fort Worth, while the other two were transported by ground to hospitals in Eastland and Breckenridge. Details about the severity of their injuries have not been released.
By around 5:30 p.m., one lane of traffic was reopened, allowing vehicles to begin moving again after the closure.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they are provided.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Construction Zones Can Increase the Risk of Multi-Vehicle Crashes
Road construction areas often bring sudden changes in traffic flow. Lanes may narrow, shift, or merge, requiring drivers to adjust quickly. These conditions can raise the chance of crashes, especially when multiple vehicles are traveling close together.
Reduced speed limits are common in these zones, but not all drivers follow them. When speeds vary between vehicles, the risk of rear-end or chain-reaction collisions increases. Barriers, equipment, and workers nearby can also limit space and visibility.
Staying alert and slowing down in construction areas can help reduce these risks. Keeping a safe distance between vehicles gives drivers more time to react to sudden stops or changes in traffic patterns.
