Butler County, OH (May 15, 2026) – Two people suffered serious injuries following a wrong-way crash involving four vehicles early on Friday morning on Interstate 75 in West Chester. Emergency units responded around 2:18 a.m. after reports of a reckless driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75.

According to preliminary information, the wrong-way driver was operating a 2012 Honda Civic when the vehicle collided with a 2016 Honda Accord along the interstate. Investigators said the Accord had also been reported for reckless driving before the crash. After the initial impact, the Accord traveled into the median before turning around and being struck by a Freightliner traveling in the right lane.

A Kia traveling through the area was later hit by debris scattered across the roadway. The drivers of the Freightliner and Kia were not injured during the incident.

The wrong-way driver was removed from the vehicle by emergency crews and taken to UC West Chester Hospital with life-threatening injuries before being airlifted to UC Medical Center. The driver of the Honda Accord also suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to the same medical center by ambulance.

The interstate remained shut down for several hours overnight as emergency units cleared the scene and documented evidence from the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.

We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.

Why Wrong-Way Interstate Crashes Often Result in Severe Injuries

Wrong-way crashes on interstates frequently lead to serious injuries because vehicles are often traveling at highway speeds in opposite directions. The forces generated during head-on or near-head-on impacts can cause significant vehicle damage and increase the risk of entrapment.

Investigators usually review traffic camera footage, witness reports, and vehicle movement to determine how a driver entered the wrong side of the highway. Lane markings, entrance ramps, and roadway lighting may also be examined during the investigation.

When impairment is suspected, investigators may later review toxicology results and driving behavior in the lead-up to the crash. These findings can help explain how the collision developed across multiple vehicles.
