Collier County, FL (April 12, 2026) – A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was seriously injured early Sunday morning after being struck by debris during a crash on Interstate 75.
According to FHP, the incident occurred near mile marker 64 as the trooper was outside his patrol vehicle assisting a disabled motorist.
Investigators say a Toyota sedan, driven by 32-year-old Jonathan Ronald Munas of Sarasota, was traveling northbound in the outside lane when it collided with the patrol car.
The impact caused significant damage to the cruiser, including the separation of a tire and bumper. Debris from the crash struck the trooper, resulting in serious injuries.
Emergency crews transported the trooper to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities reported that Munas showed signs of impairment and was later arrested on DUI charges. FHP stated his blood alcohol content measured 0.159.
Munas was taken to the Collier County Jail following the incident. The crash remains under investigation, and additional details may be released as they become available.
We are thinking of the injured trooper and wish him a full recovery.
Why Roadside Assistance Situations Can Be Dangerous for First Responders
First responders assisting motorists on highways face significant risks from passing traffic.
Even with emergency lights activated, approaching drivers may fail to slow down or move over.
High speeds combined with limited space can lead to serious incidents, especially when vehicles collide with stopped patrol units.
