What Can Cause Dump Trucks to Strike Bridges on Highways?
Bridge strikes involving dump trucks can happen for several reasons, including equipment problems, raised truck beds, or driver misjudgment of vehicle height. Commercial trucks often travel through highway ramps and overpasses with limited clearance, making height awareness especially important.
Investigators may review whether the truck’s dump bed was fully lowered before the vehicle entered the roadway. Mechanical failures, roadway design, and visibility conditions can also become part of the review process after these crashes. Bridge impacts may cause significant damage to both the truck and roadway structures, sometimes leading to lane closures while inspections are completed. Emergency crews often secure the area quickly because damaged bridges and heavy debris can create additional hazards for passing drivers.
