Crown Point, IN (May 17, 2026) – A 25-year-old Chicago woman died following a two-vehicle crash that shut down Interstate 65 overnight near the U.S. 231 exit in Crown Point on Saturday, May 16.
Indiana State Police said the crash involved a minivan carrying seven adults and a Chevrolet passenger vehicle. Investigators reported the minivan was traveling in the right lane at a very low speed, estimated between 10 and 15 mph, while following another vehicle that was experiencing mechanical problems.
Police said the Chevrolet driver did not realize how slowly the minivan was moving and struck the rear left side of the vehicle. The impact caused the minivan to leave the roadway and enter a ditch.
Four people were transported to area hospitals with severe injuries. One of those individuals, identified as 25-year-old Navya Gadusu of Chicago, later died at Franciscan Health Crown Point from blunt-force injuries.
Authorities said the interstate was closed for several hours while emergency crews responded and cleared the scene. It has since reopened to traffic. Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Navya Gadusu.
What Is Reviewed in Rear-End Highway Crashes?
Rear-end crashes on highways are often analyzed by examining speed differences between vehicles and driver awareness leading up to the impact. Investigators typically review whether reduced-speed vehicles were properly visible to approaching traffic.
Roadway conditions, lighting, and traffic flow are also assessed to understand how quickly drivers could react. Vehicle damage and resting positions can help reconstruct the sequence of impact.
In severe crashes involving multiple occupants, seat belt use and interior vehicle conditions are also reviewed as part of injury analysis. These factors help explain how injuries occurred during the collision.
