North Chicago, IL (May 17, 2026) – A 26-year-old woman was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle late Saturday night near the intersection of Green Bay Road and Buckley Road in North Chicago, according to authorities.
Emergency crews responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m. and located the woman in the roadway with severe injuries. She was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in critical condition for emergency treatment. Investigators later located the suspected vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta, near the entrance to the Greenbelt Forest Preserve several miles away. Authorities reported that the vehicle showed damage consistent with the collision.
The Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County assisted North Chicago police with the investigation, processing evidence at both the crash scene and where the vehicle was recovered. Portions of Buckley Road remained closed for several hours while investigators worked overnight.
Our thoughts are with the injured woman and her loved ones during this difficult time, and we hope for her full recovery.
Pedestrian Safety and Driver Awareness
Pedestrian crashes often result in life-threatening injuries due to the lack of protection for those on foot. Drivers are urged to remain attentive, obey posted speed limits, and stay alert for pedestrians crossing intersections or traveling near roadways, particularly during nighttime hours.
Low visibility, distractions, and high traffic areas can all increase the risk of serious collisions. Both motorists and pedestrians should exercise caution, remain aware of surrounding traffic conditions, and use designated crossings whenever possible.
Authorities also remind drivers involved in collisions to remain at the scene and cooperate with emergency responders. Quick medical attention and timely reporting are critical factors in improving outcomes after serious crashes.
