What Factors Can Increase the Risk of Pedestrian Crashes at Night?
Pedestrian accidents often occur after dark, especially along roads that lack sidewalks or proper lighting. Reduced visibility can make it harder for drivers to notice someone walking near the roadway, particularly if the person is wearing dark clothing.
Road design can also influence safety. Areas where pedestrians share space with vehicle traffic, such as rural roads or narrow streets, may carry higher risks when foot traffic is present. Curves, intersections, and limited street lighting may further affect how quickly a driver can see someone ahead.
Driver awareness and speed also affect how safely vehicles interact with people on foot. Even a small delay in reaction time can change the outcome when someone is walking close to a travel lane. Clear lighting, slower speeds, and dedicated walking paths can all contribute to safer road conditions for pedestrians.
