The incident occurred last Wednesday afternoon, April 1, when the woman, in her 80s, reportedly fell while attempting to cross the tracks. The train attempted to stop but was unable to prevent the collision. Two railroad crossings in the area were temporarily closed as police investigated the incident.
Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the accident, and further details will be released as available.
Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased.
Why Pedestrian Train Incidents Are Often Fatal
Collisions involving trains and pedestrians are extremely dangerous due to the size, speed, and momentum of trains. Trains cannot stop quickly, even in emergencies, making any contact with a person highly likely to result in severe injury or death.
Railroad crossings have warning signals and barriers designed to alert pedestrians, but falls or missteps near tracks can still lead to tragic outcomes. Emergency responders focus on securing the area, assisting any other individuals nearby, and coordinating with railway officials for a safe investigation.
