Delaware County, OH (April 13, 2026) – An update has been released following a deadly multi-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 71 involving a tractor-trailer and several stopped vehicles.
According to troopers, the crash happened when a tractor-trailer struck multiple vehicles from behind, leading to a nine-vehicle accident. Court documents filed on Monday, April 13, indicate that traffic camera footage showed the truck driver did not attempt to brake or avoid the stopped vehicles before impact. A witness traveling behind the truck estimated its speed at around 70 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
Authorities confirmed that three people from Ashley, a 37-year-old man, a 36-year-old woman, and a 1-year-old child, were killed in the collision. They were traveling in a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado when the crash occurred. Their identities have not yet been released.
Three additional people suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals. Interstate 71 was closed in both directions for several hours as emergency units responded and crews worked to clear the scene.
The truck driver was taken into custody and is being held at the Delaware County Jail. He faces a charge of vehicular homicide, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Monday, April 21.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they are provided.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Factors Are Often Reviewed After Large Multi-Vehicle Crashes?
After a crash involving several vehicles, multiple elements are typically reviewed to piece together what happened. Traffic flow at the time of the incident is often examined, especially if vehicles were stopped or slowing down before impact. This can help show how quickly conditions changed on the road.
Vehicle speed and driver response are also closely looked at. Investigators may use camera footage or witness statements to determine whether drivers attempted to brake or avoid a crash. These details can help explain how the collision unfolded.
Road conditions, visibility, and spacing between vehicles can also provide useful insight. In chain-reaction crashes, even a small delay in reaction time can lead to multiple impacts involving several vehicles.
