Rear-End Crashes on Highways and Breakdown Lane Risks
Routes carrying regional traffic, such as Interstate 93, can experience sudden hazards when vehicles stop on the shoulder or breakdown lane. When incidents occur near busy travel lanes in areas like Derry, emergency crews often focus first on securing the roadway and protecting those involved.
Rear-end collisions on highways frequently occur when a moving vehicle strikes a stopped or slowing vehicle. Drivers may have limited time to react, especially if traffic is heavy or if the stopped vehicle is close to the travel lane.
Breakdown lanes provide space for disabled vehicles, but they can still pose risks when passing traffic is traveling at highway speeds. Visibility, driver attention, and traffic flow can all influence whether approaching drivers can safely avoid stopped vehicles.
