Mercer County, KY (March 12, 2026) – A man died after a crash involving a pickup truck and a garbage truck in Mercer County.
Emergency units responded before 7 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, to the area of Louisville Rd (U.S. 127 NB) near Kirkwood Rd in the Salvisa community. Early reports show a Rumpke trash truck was stopped in the northbound lane while collecting garbage at a residence.
Investigators said a Chevrolet Silverado traveling northbound struck the rear of the garbage truck. The impact caused severe damage to the pickup.
The driver of the Silverado, identified as 44-year-old Jason McCarty of Harrodsburg, died at the scene. One person was taken to a hospital for treatment, though details about their condition were not released.
A spokesperson for Rumpke said the garbage truck driver was not hurt but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. The crash led to the closure of the northbound U.S. 127 near a Dollar Store in Salvisa, which was later reopened.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Rear-End Crashes Often Occur Near Service Vehicles
Service vehicles such as garbage trucks frequently stop along roadways while crews complete their work. These stops may occur at homes, businesses, or along rural roads where traffic continues to pass nearby.
Drivers approaching these vehicles may not always anticipate a sudden stop in the lane. Limited reaction time, higher speeds, or distractions can increase the likelihood of a rear-end crash.
Large service vehicles are also heavier and taller than passenger vehicles. When a smaller vehicle strikes the rear of a truck, the height and weight difference can cause severe damage to the front of the car or pickup.
Because of these risks, drivers are often encouraged to slow down and remain alert when approaching vehicles performing roadside work.
