East Hartford, CT (March 31, 2026) – One person was injured on Tuesday morning after a fire broke out at a four-unit apartment building on Tolland St in East Hartford.
The fire was reported at about 10:04 a.m. Emergency units arrived roughly one minute later and encountered active fire conditions inside the building.
Firefighters located a person inside a first-floor bedroom toward the back of the apartment. The person was pulled from the building and taken to a hospital in Hartford for treatment, but their condition has not been released.
Other residents on the second floor were able to evacuate safely before crews arrived. Officials estimated that about five people were displaced after the building was considered uninhabitable for the immediate future.
Crews worked to contain the fire, which was largely limited to the first-floor unit. Some damage also extended to the second floor and the outside of the structure.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Apartment Fires Can Displace Multiple Residents
Fires in apartment buildings often affect more than one household because several units share the same structure. Even when a fire starts in a single apartment, heat, smoke, and water used to put it out can spread through walls, ceilings, and hallways.
Smoke damage can make nearby units unsafe to occupy. Electrical systems, plumbing, and structural components may also be affected during a fire.
In many cases, buildings are temporarily deemed unsafe until inspections confirm that the structure and utilities are stable. During that time, residents may need to find temporary housing while repairs and cleanup take place.
