Edison, NJ (March 4, 2026) – A 77-year-old woman from Metuchen was killed on Monday afternoon, March 2, in a six-vehicle crash at New Durham Rd and Talmadge Rd near the Fresh Mart. The collision happened at approximately 2:45 p.m.
Preliminary findings show a 2016 Buick Enclave was traveling eastbound on New Durham Rd when it left the roadway at a high rate of speed. The SUV became airborne, entered Talmadge Rd, and struck a flatbed tractor-trailer making a left onto the road.
The Buick went underneath the trailer and was split in half by the impact. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene at about 3:24 p.m.
The force of the crash pushed the tractor-trailer into four other vehicles, causing additional collisions. One driver was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of minor head and leg injuries. No other serious injuries were reported.
Investigators believe a medical episode may have contributed to the driver losing control. The incident remains under review by authorities. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Medical Emergencies Can Contribute to Serious Multi-Vehicle Crashes
Medical events behind the wheel can lead to sudden and unexpected loss of control. Conditions such as heart problems, seizures, or fainting may prevent a driver from reacting to traffic or road conditions.
When a vehicle leaves the roadway at a high speed, the risk of severe damage increases sharply. If a car becomes airborne or strikes a large commercial truck, the size and weight difference can lead to extreme structural damage. Secondary crashes are also common when heavy trucks are pushed into nearby traffic.
In multi-vehicle accidents, the chain reaction can unfold in seconds. Even drivers who were not directly involved in the initial impact may suffer injuries or vehicle damage due to the force transferred through surrounding traffic.
