Bloomington, IN (July 10, 2026) – An 85-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after a fatal collision involving an SUV and a box truck on Wednesday morning, July 8, near the Interstate 69 overpass on State Road 45/46 Bypass in Bloomington. Officers responded to the scene around 10:40 a.m.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2005 Cadillac SRX was waiting in the left-turn lane to enter northbound Interstate 69 when it turned into the path of an oncoming 2024 International box truck. The truck struck the passenger side of the SUV, sending both vehicles off the north side of the roadway and into a ditch.

The driver of the Cadillac was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of family members. The driver of the box truck, a 46-year-old Orleans man, showed no signs of impairment and was taken to a local hospital, where he voluntarily provided a blood sample.

Westbound lanes of State Road 45/46 Bypass remained closed for several hours following the collision. Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and additional details may be released as the investigation progresses. We extend our sincere condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.

How Crashes Involving Turning Vehicles and Commercial Trucks Are Typically Reviewed

Crashes involving turning vehicles and commercial trucks can involve factors such as vehicle movement, right-of-way, roadway layout, and visibility. Reviews may examine the direction each vehicle was traveling, the timing of the turn, and the point of impact. Commercial trucks require longer stopping distances and have different handling characteristics than passenger vehicles, which may affect how collisions unfold.

Vehicle damage, roadway evidence, and traffic conditions can also provide additional context. These details help explain how turning-related crashes occur and why they can result in severe outcomes.
