Farmville, NC (March 12, 2026) – A 62-year-old man lost his life on Wednesday evening, March 11, after a hit-and-run crash involving a motorcycle and another vehicle at the intersection of US 13 and US 264 Alt near Moye Turnage Rd in Pitt County.

Emergency units responded to the scene just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11. Early reports indicate that a vehicle struck a motorcycle, throwing the rider from the bike during the collision.

The motorcyclist was identified as Robinson Babcock, 62, of Winterville. He died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Witnesses told authorities the vehicle involved left the scene immediately after the collision. It was last seen traveling south on US 13 toward Greene County.

The vehicle believed to be involved is described as a dark-colored SUV with heavy damage to its right side. Road closures were put in place in both directions around 8 p.m., and the area remained blocked for several hours while crews worked at the scene. Traffic resumed shortly before 11 p.m.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

Why Hit-and-Run Crashes Involving Motorcycles Can Be Especially Dangerous

Motorcycle riders face a higher risk of serious injury in traffic accidents because they lack the protective structure found in passenger vehicles. When a crash occurs, riders are more likely to be thrown from the bike, which can lead to severe or fatal injuries even at moderate speeds.

Intersections and highway junctions are common locations for motorcycle crashes. Drivers may fail to notice motorcycles while turning, changing lanes, or crossing traffic. Because motorcycles are smaller and less visible, riders depend heavily on other motorists paying close attention.

When a driver leaves the scene after a collision, it can delay medical assistance and slow the investigation into what happened. Investigations in these situations often rely on roadway evidence, witness accounts, and vehicle damage patterns to piece together how the incident unfolded.
