Furnas Co., NE (April 21, 2026) – A fatal rollover crash claimed the life of a young man Sunday evening, April 19, southeast of Cambridge at the intersection of Road 412 and Road 720.
Emergency units responded around 9:26 p.m. and located a Jeep Wrangler overturned in a ditch. The vehicle had rolled onto its roof after leaving the roadway along a gravel stretch.
Authorities identified the victim as 21-year-old Cooper L. Wendland of Holbrook, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other occupants, a 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl, were able to exit the vehicle and later went to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.
Preliminary findings indicate the driver lost control while attempting a right turn on the gravel road. The vehicle began to fishtail before running off the roadway and overturning.
The incident remains under review by authorities. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim, and wish those injured a swift and full recovery.
What Contributes to Rollover Crashes on Gravel Roads?
Roadways with limited traction like gravel surfaces near rural intersections can increase the risk of losing control. In Furnas County, responders often manage scenes carefully when crashes occur on these types of roads.
Gravel roads may develop uneven patterns, sometimes called washboards, which can make steering more difficult. When a driver attempts to turn at speed, the vehicle may begin to slide or fishtail, especially if traction is reduced.
Once a vehicle leaves the roadway, the transition to a ditch or uneven ground can increase the chance of a rollover. Vehicles with higher centers of gravity, such as sport utility vehicles, may be more likely to overturn in these situations.
