What Causes Head-On Collisions on Rural Roads in Maine
Head-on crashes are among the deadliest types of accidents on two-lane roads. They happen when a driver crosses the center line, which can result from distraction, fatigue, or a sudden loss of vehicle control. Rural roads with no physical barrier between opposing lanes offer little margin for error.
In Maine, many two-lane roads pass through areas with limited lighting and long stretches between intersections, which can make it harder for drivers to react in time. Speed and road conditions can both affect how quickly a crossing vehicle reaches the oncoming lane. Even at moderate speeds, a head-on impact can cause severe or fatal injuries because the force of both vehicles combines at the moment of collision.
