What Factors Often Contribute to Pedestrian Crashes at Night
Pedestrian crashes at night often occur because visibility is reduced for both drivers and pedestrians near roadways. Headlights provide a limited field of view, which can make it harder to notice someone in the roadway until the last moment.
Road design and lighting conditions can also affect how easily pedestrians are seen. Areas with fewer streetlights or wide travel lanes may increase the chance that a driver does not notice someone crossing or walking nearby.
Traffic speed is another factor that can affect the outcome of pedestrian crashes. At higher speeds, drivers have less time to stop or steer away, and impacts tend to be more severe.
Clothing color and surrounding light sources may also affect visibility. Dark clothing and dim lighting can make it harder for pedestrians to stand out against the background at night.
