Groton, CT (March 22, 2026) – A car struck a Connecticut State Police cruiser on Saturday evening, March 21, while troopers were responding to an earlier crash on Interstate 95 in Groton.
The initial crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway between exits 83 and 85, shutting down two lanes. At least one person sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the first crash.
While officers were investigating the scene around 7:50 p.m., an unoccupied state police cruiser was struck by another vehicle. The driver of that car suffered minor injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate both incidents, and more details will be released as they become available.
Our thoughts are with those affected as they recover.
How Secondary Crashes Happen During Highway Incidents
Secondary crashes often occur when vehicles are slowing or stopped near an initial incident. Drivers may not notice hazards in time, especially on high-speed highways.
Lane closures and sudden stops can increase the risk of collisions, even involving emergency vehicles. Maintaining safe following distances and staying alert for officers and responders is critical to preventing additional crashes.
