Why Utility Pole Crashes Often Result in Severe Damage
Crashes involving utility poles can cause major vehicle damage because poles are fixed objects that do not absorb impact the way another vehicle might. When a vehicle strikes a pole at speed, the force of the collision is concentrated into a small area of the vehicle.
Entrapment is also more common in pole crashes due to crushed doors and structural damage around the passenger compartment. Emergency crews may need specialized rescue tools to safely remove occupants from heavily damaged vehicles.
Roadway conditions, visibility, and vehicle movement are often reviewed after these incidents. Investigators may also examine impact damage and tire marks to better understand how the vehicle left the roadway before striking the pole.
