What Typically Happens After a Fatal House Fire in Georgia?
When a fatal fire occurs in Georgia, investigators from the state fire marshal’s office and local fire departments work together to determine how and where the fire started. This process can take days or weeks, depending on the extent of the damage and the complexity of the scene.
Cause-and-origin investigations rely on burn patterns, structural damage, and physical evidence. Investigators may also interview neighbors or bystanders who witnessed the fire in its early stages. Their observations can help piece together a clearer picture of how the fire developed.
Georgia law requires that all fire fatalities be thoroughly reviewed and documented. These findings can inform fire prevention efforts and help communities understand common risk factors in residential fires.
