Why Construction Zones Can Be Especially Dangerous for Road Workers
Construction zones place road workers close to moving traffic, often with limited protection between workers and passing vehicles. Even at lower speeds, crashes in these areas can lead to severe or fatal injuries because workers may have little time to react.
Investigators commonly review traffic flow, signage placement, and driver visibility after work-zone accidents. Flaggers and sign holders are especially vulnerable because they are positioned near active lanes to direct approaching vehicles. Distractions, speeding, and failure to follow temporary traffic controls can all increase the risk of collisions in construction areas. Investigators may also examine roadway layout, weather conditions, and the placement of warning signs when determining how the incident occurred. Work-zone crashes often highlight the need for drivers to remain alert and reduce speed when approaching roadside crews.
