Kansas City, MO (May 17, 2026) – One person died, and two others suffered life-threatening injuries following a wrong-way crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 670 in Kansas City.
Emergency units responded just after 2:45 a.m. on Sunday to the area near Locust Street after reports of a serious collision. Investigators said a Kia Optima was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-670 and crossed multiple lanes before colliding with a westbound Chevy Avalanche.
Officials confirmed that one passenger inside the Kia died after being taken to a hospital. Two additional passengers in the Kia suffered critical injuries and remained in life-threatening condition.
The drivers of both vehicles were reportedly not injured. Southbound lanes of the highway remained closed for approximately four hours while crews worked at the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Wrong-Way Interstate Crashes Often Lead to Severe Injuries
Wrong-way crashes on interstate highways frequently result in serious or fatal injuries because vehicles are often traveling at high speeds in opposite directions. The force generated during these head-on impacts can cause extensive damage, especially when several occupants are in a single vehicle.
Interstates like I-670 carry fast-moving traffic across multiple lanes, leaving little time for drivers to avoid a vehicle traveling the wrong way. Overnight and early morning hours may also reduce visibility and reaction time for motorists.
Investigators often examine vehicle movement, lane positions, and possible driver impairment after these crashes. Long roadway closures are common because crews must document the scene, remove damaged vehicles, and safely reopen traffic lanes after the collision.
