Keymar, MD (March 30, 2026) – A boiler explosion at Catoctin Mountain Growers tragically claimed the life of owner Robert Van Wingerden and left three employees injured on Friday evening, March 20.

One employee was reported in critical condition, and all three were transported to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center for treatment. Investigators confirmed that the blast originated from an industrial-sized boiler containing water heated to 180 degrees.

The incident remains under investigation, and authorities continue to examine the cause of the explosion.
We extend our sincere condolences to the Van Wingerden family and all affected by this tragic event.
Safety Risks of Industrial Boiler Operations
Industrial boilers operate under high pressure and extreme temperatures, making safety precautions critical. Accidents can occur if equipment fails, maintenance is insufficient, or safety protocols are not followed. Steam and hot water from a malfunctioning boiler can cause severe burns or structural damage.
Facilities that use large-scale boilers typically follow strict inspection and maintenance schedules to prevent accidents. Protective equipment, emergency shutdown procedures, and staff training are essential to reduce the risk of injury. When explosions occur, emergency responders must quickly manage fires, structural hazards, and burn injuries while securing the scene.
