Keymar, MD (March 21, 2026) – Three people were injured Friday evening following what was initially reported as an explosion at a greenhouse facility in Carroll County.
The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on March 20 at Catoctin Mountain Growers, located at 8051 Sixes Bridge Road. Emergency crews found extensive damage at the scene, including an overturned vehicle caught in debris.
A 65-year-old man was critically injured and flown to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Two other employees sustained burn injuries; one was taken to the hospital in stable condition, while the other declined treatment. Officials confirmed that all employees have been accounted for.
Investigators with the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal and the ATF determined that a large hot-water holding tank had ruptured, spilling 180-degree water and causing damage consistent with an explosion.
Officials continue examining the site to fully understand how the rupture occurred.
We are thinking of those injured as they recover.
How Hot-Water Tank Failures Can Cause Serious Injuries
Boilers and hot-water tanks store water at very high temperatures, which can cause severe burns if a rupture occurs. When a tank fails, the force and heat of the released water can overturn objects and injure anyone nearby.
These incidents may mimic explosions due to the sudden release of energy and debris. Protective equipment, careful maintenance, and strict safety protocols are key to reducing the risk of injury. Even seemingly routine industrial equipment can become hazardous if a failure occurs.
