What Factors Can Contribute to Wrong-Way Driving Accidents?
Wrong-way or head-on crashes occur when a driver enters a roadway from the wrong direction, sometimes due to confusion, poor visibility, or missed signage. These incidents are more common at night when it is harder to see lane markings and road indicators.
Alcohol use and fatigue are also linked to many wrong-way accidents. Drivers who are impaired or tired may have slower reaction times or misjudge directions. In some cases, unfamiliar road layouts or unclear exit ramps can increase the risk.
Modern highways often include warning systems such as reflective signs and pavement markings designed to alert drivers if they are going the wrong way. Even so, these crashes can happen quickly and tend to result in serious outcomes due to the force of impact.
