Why Bicycle Crashes Can End in Serious Injuries
Cyclists have very little protection compared to people inside a motor vehicle. There is no steel frame, airbag, or crumple zone absorbing the force of a collision. When a bicycle is struck or goes down, the rider often makes direct contact with the road, a curb, or another vehicle, which can cause significant harm even at relatively low speeds.
The speed and size of the other vehicle involved plays a major role in how severe the outcome is. Intersections are among the most dangerous locations for cyclists, particularly when drivers fail to yield, cut across a bike lane, or do not see a rider in time to stop. Low visibility during dawn, dusk, or nighttime hours increases this risk further.
Road conditions can also contribute to serious outcomes. Gravel, wet pavement, and uneven surfaces can cause a rider to lose control before any collision occurs, and once a cyclist falls, secondary contact with the ground or nearby traffic can compound the initial injury. Recovery from bicycle crash injuries can be lengthy, particularly when fractures, head trauma, or internal injuries are involved.
