Lisbon, ME (April 8, 2026) – Two people were hospitalized following a collision on Route 196 near Summer Street during the morning commute on Tuesday.
The crash happened just before 7 a.m. on April 7, when a Volvo SUV turning left from Summer Street onto Route 196 toward Topsham was struck by a westbound Ford F-150. Preliminary information indicates the Volvo pulled out in front of the pickup at the time of the collision.
The 53-year-old woman driving the Volvo was trapped and freed by the Lisbon Fire Department before being taken to Central Maine Medical Center with serious injuries. The 30-year-old man driving the Ford was also hospitalized with serious injuries at Maine Medical Center. Neither driver’s name has been released.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage, with the Volvo considered a total loss. Maine State Police assisted with crash reconstruction using drone technology, and Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office helped manage traffic while road detours were set up.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.
Our thoughts are with those injured as they recover.
Why Left-Turn Collisions Can Result in Serious Injuries
Collisions that occur when a vehicle turns across oncoming traffic often result in severe impacts. Drivers attempting a left turn must accurately judge speed and distance, and any miscalculation can lead to a high-force collision.
These crashes can be particularly dangerous because the turning vehicle is often hit on the side, where there is less structural protection for the driver. Higher speeds on the oncoming road increase the energy of impact, contributing to serious injuries and vehicle damage. A quick response from emergency personnel can be critical for freeing trapped occupants and providing life-saving care.
