Troopers responded at about 11:16 p.m. after reports of a collision involving a Chevrolet Traverse and a Volkswagen GTI. Authorities said the Volkswagen struck the rear of the Chevrolet, causing the Traverse to leave the roadway and overturn into a wooded area.
The driver of the Chevrolet, 19-year-old Drew Satterfield of Middletown, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Volkswagen driver, 22-year-old Easton Bryant of Chester, Maryland, was flown to a local trauma center for treatment of his injuries.
Police indicated that speeding and possible impairment may have contributed to the crash. The roadway was closed for more than two hours while the scene was cleared.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased.
How Rear-End Crashes on Highways Can Be Fatal
Rear-end collisions occur when a vehicle strikes another from behind, often due to sudden stops, following too closely, or excessive speed. Highways increase severity because vehicles travel at higher speeds, which magnifies the impact.
When a struck vehicle leaves the roadway, it may collide with barriers, trees, or other obstacles, increasing the risk of rollover or severe injuries.
Seat belts, airbags, and modern vehicle safety features help reduce harm, but young drivers or high-speed impacts can still result in fatalities. Emergency responders prioritize quickly reaching injured occupants, securing the scene, and transporting victims to trauma centers for immediate care.
