Nashville, TN (May 5, 2026) – Two drivers were taken to the hospital after a vehicle crash early Tuesday morning, May 5, on Interstate 24 West in Antioch. The crash was reported at 4:42 a.m. near mile marker 57, close to the Haywood Lane exit.
Officials said the crash involved a box truck and a car. The box truck hit a guardrail, while the car went over the guardrail and overturned in the woods below.
One person was trapped inside the overturned car and was found hanging upside down by a seat belt. Emergency units worked to free the driver, who was removed shortly before 6:00 a.m. and taken to the hospital.
The box truck driver was also taken to the hospital with injuries. Both drivers were believed to have injuries that were not life-threatening.
Officials said the box truck is believed to have rear-ended the car in the far right lane before both vehicles hit the guardrail. Crews used a winch to stabilize the box truck before towing it away. The interstate reopened shortly after 8:00 a.m. after several hours of lane closures.
The crash remains under investigation. Additional details may become available as authorities continue their review. Our thoughts are with those injured as they receive care and recover.
Guardrail Crashes and Overturned Vehicles on Highways
Guardrail crashes can become serious when a vehicle leaves the travel lane at highway speed. A guardrail may reduce the chance of a vehicle entering a more dangerous area, but the impact can still cause major damage.
Overturned vehicles create added danger for people inside. A driver or passenger may be held in place by a seat belt, which can prevent ejection but may also make rescue more complex. Emergency units may need to stabilize the vehicle before safely removing someone.
Highway crashes involving lane closures can also affect traffic for hours. Damaged vehicles, debris, and recovery equipment may block lanes while crews work. Early morning darkness can add to the risk for drivers approaching the scene.
