Pottawatomie County, OK (August 8, 2026) – A 35-year-old Shawnee man was killed, and a passenger was injured Thursday evening after a vehicle left the roadway and crashed on Garrett’s Lake Road in Pottawatomie County.

The collision happened around 5:30 p.m. on Garrett’s Lake Road, just north of Interstate 40 and Highway 18. According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol collision report, Roger Harris was driving west when his car left the road, rolled over, and struck a tree.

Harris died in the crash. A passenger was also injured and taken for medical care, although the passenger’s current condition was not immediately known.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. We extend our deepest condolences to Roger Harris’s family, friends, and loved ones and wish the injured passenger a full recovery.

Why Rollover Crashes Can Cause Serious Injuries

When a vehicle leaves the roadway and rolls over, occupants can be exposed to multiple forces as the vehicle changes direction and strikes the ground or nearby objects. The severity of injuries can depend on factors such as vehicle speed, the number of rollovers, whether occupants were properly restrained, and the presence of fixed objects along the roadway.

Investigators may examine tire marks, vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and the location of the vehicle after the crash to reconstruct what happened. They may also review witness statements and other available evidence to determine why the vehicle left the roadway.

When a rollover ends with a collision against a fixed object such as a tree, investigators may pay particular attention to the vehicle’s path and the roadway conditions leading up to the impact. These findings can help establish the sequence of events and identify factors that contributed to the fatal crash.
