Orland, CA (March 21, 2026) – A 53-year-old woman died following a crash in Orland. The collision occurred around 7:23 a.m. on Friday, March 20, along County Road 20 just east of Interstate 5.
Emergency units responded to the scene after a crash involving a Toyota sedan and a Kawasaki utility vehicle. Authorities said a 19-year-old woman, identified as Mattie Joy Gunther, was driving the Toyota eastbound behind the utility vehicle.
For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota struck the rear of the Kawasaki. The impact caused the 53-year-old driver of the utility vehicle to be thrown from it, resulting in fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gunther remained at the scene and assisted until help arrived. Authorities reported that impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Rear-End Crashes Can Lead to Severe Outcomes
Rear-end crashes can become especially dangerous when smaller or open vehicles are involved. Utility vehicles, motorcycles, and similar vehicles offer less protection, increasing the risk of serious injury.
When a vehicle is struck from behind, the impact force can eject occupants or cause them to lose control. This is more likely when seat restraints are limited or not used.
Road conditions, following distance, and reaction time all influence how these crashes occur. Maintaining safe following distances and staying alert can help reduce the risk, but even low-speed impacts can have severe consequences, depending on the vehicles involved.
