Why Nighttime Pedestrian Crashes Often Result in Severe Injuries
Pedestrian crashes that happen at night are often more dangerous because drivers may have less time to see someone walking near or within the roadway. Reduced visibility, limited street lighting, and dark clothing can all make it harder for motorists to react quickly.
Roads without sidewalks or wide shoulders may place pedestrians closer to moving traffic, especially in rural or less-developed areas. When a person is walking in or near a travel lane, the risk of a serious roadway collision increases significantly, particularly on roads where vehicles travel at higher speeds.
Investigators reviewing pedestrian crashes may examine lighting conditions, vehicle speed, road design, and the position of the person walking before contact occurred. These details can help provide a clearer picture of how the fatal crash unfolded.
