Providence, RI (March 19, 2026) – An assistant attorney general was hurt in a late-night crash on Wednesday, March 18, after a fleeing driver ran a red light in Providence.
The accident happened just after 11 p.m. near Dave Gavitt Way. Officials said the driver, later identified as 30-year-old Antonio Cueva, was attempting to evade police when the collision occurred. He had reportedly been driving at a high speed on Westminster St without headlights or proper signals before continuing onto Broadway.
Authorities stated that Cueva ran a red light at the intersection with Dave Gavitt Way and crashed into a vehicle driven by Assistant Attorney General Steve Regine. Regine was taken to a nearby hospital, though the extent of his injuries has not been released.
Cueva’s vehicle caught fire after the crash, but he was not seriously hurt. He was later taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including reckless driving and driving to endanger, resulting in injury.
The police continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they are provided.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
What Happens When a Driver Flees and Causes a Crash?
When a driver attempts to flee and causes a crash, the situation often involves sudden and dangerous movements on the road. High speeds, failure to obey traffic signals, and lack of visibility can increase the risk of a collision, especially in busy city areas.
In many cases, these crashes occur at intersections where other drivers have little time to react. The force of impact can lead to serious vehicle damage and injuries, even if one driver was following traffic rules.
After such incidents, details about the driver’s actions, road conditions, and vehicle movement are often reviewed. Information from witnesses and physical evidence at the scene can help piece together how the crash unfolded.
