Richland County, SC (January 9, 2026) – A deadly crash involving two vehicles on westbound I-20 in Richland County claimed one life and left another person injured on Thursday afternoon, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP).
The collision occurred on January 8 near the 70-mile marker. Troopers reported that a 2014 Jeep was attempting to change lanes when it struck a minivan traveling in the same direction. Following the impact, the Jeep veered off the right side of the interstate and overturned.
Emergency crews arrived quickly to find the driver of the Jeep deceased at the scene. The identity of the individual has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The minivan’s driver was not hurt, but a passenger in the vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to Prisma Health Richland for treatment. Their current condition has not been made public.
The crash resulted in extended delays along I-20 westbound as law enforcement secured the area and initiated an investigation. SCHP continues to examine the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
