Richmond, VA (January 8, 2026) – A tragic crash in downtown Richmond claimed the life of a pedestrian on Tuesday afternoon after he was struck by a dump truck while crossing the street in a designated crosswalk.
At approximately 1:43 p.m. on December 6, officers with the Richmond Police Department responded to the intersection of W. Leigh St and N. Harrison St after receiving reports of a pedestrian being hit by a privately-owned dump truck. Upon arrival, they found the victim, 64-year-old Donald Jaciuk of Richmond, unresponsive in the roadway.
Emergency responders worked quickly to provide aid, and Jaciuk was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead from the injuries sustained in the collision.
Preliminary findings from the investigation reveal that Jaciuk was crossing W. Leigh St within the marked crosswalk when the dump truck’s driver, making a left turn from N. Harrison St onto W. Leigh St, struck him. The driver has not been publicly identified at this time, and the investigation remains active.
This incident marks the third pedestrian fatality in Richmond within a span of just ten days, intensifying community concerns about pedestrian safety and driver awareness on city streets. Authorities have not announced whether any charges will be filed, but the circumstances continue to be reviewed by crash investigators.
We would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased victim.
