Roanoke, VA (April 1, 2026) – A man was killed in a hit-and-run crash involving a moped and a pickup truck late on Tuesday night in Roanoke.
According to police, officers responded around 11:52 p.m. to the 1100 block of Orange Avenue NE for reports of a crash. Upon arrival, they found the moped driver suffering from serious injuries.
Despite emergency efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the pickup truck involved in the collision fled the area immediately after the crash. The suspect vehicle has not yet been located.
The incident prompted the closure of westbound Orange Avenue between 13th Street and Hollins Road NE for several hours while investigators processed the scene. The roadway has since reopened.
The crash remains under investigation, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward to assist in identifying the driver involved.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim.
Hit-and-run crashes leave victims without immediate accountability
Hit-and-run crashes are especially tragic because the responsible driver leaves the scene, delaying accountability and sometimes critical aid to victims.
In many cases, fleeing drivers may be attempting to avoid legal consequences, particularly if impairment or other violations are involved. However, leaving the scene of a crash is a serious offense and can result in severe penalties.
Public assistance is often crucial in solving these cases. Witness statements, surveillance footage, and tips from the community can help authorities locate the vehicle and driver involved.
