Roswell, NM (March 10, 2026) – A 16-year-old girl was killed, and six other people were injured following a serious two-vehicle crash on Tuesday evening in Roswell.

According to local authorities, the collision occurred around 6:35 p.m. on March 10 along North Union Avenue near the intersection with West 19th Street in Chaves County.

The police reported that a Honda Accord was traveling southbound on North Union Avenue at a high rate of speed when the driver apparently lost control. The vehicle then collided nearly head-on with a GMC Yukon that was traveling northbound.

Four teenagers were inside the Accord at the time of the crash, including two girls ages 15 and 16 and two 17-year-old boys. The 16-year-old girl was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

The two 17-year-old boys suffered severe injuries. They were first taken to a local hospital and later transferred to another medical facility for further treatment. The 15-year-old girl sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital before being released later that night.

The GMC Yukon was driven by a 56-year-old woman from Roswell, who had her 11-year-old daughter in the vehicle. Both were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and were later released.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation, and charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.

Why High-Speed Loss-of-Control Crashes Can Lead to Serious Injuries

Crashes involving high speeds can quickly become severe, especially when drivers lose control of their vehicles. When a vehicle travels too fast for road conditions, it may be more difficult to maintain control during turns or sudden maneuvers.

Loss-of-control crashes can also lead to vehicles crossing into opposing lanes of traffic. When this occurs, head-on or near head-on collisions may happen, which often result in significant damage and serious injuries due to the combined impact forces.

Investigators typically review vehicle speed, driver actions, road conditions, and witness statements to determine what factors may have contributed to the crash.
