Why Are Pedestrians on California Freeways at Such High Risk?
Pedestrians on California freeways face extreme danger due to the high speeds of passing vehicles and the near-total lack of lighting on many rural and suburban stretches. Unlike city streets, freeways are not designed for foot traffic, and drivers often have very little time to react when someone appears on the roadway. At night, the risk increases sharply because pedestrians are much harder to see, especially when crossing multiple lanes.
San Bernardino County’s freeway corridors, including I-10, carry heavy traffic at all hours. When a pedestrian enters a freeway, whether due to a vehicle breakdown, a mental health crisis, or other circumstances, the likelihood of a fatal outcome is significantly higher than on surface streets. Traffic safety researchers consistently identify freeway pedestrian incidents as among the most deadly in the country.
