Santa Cruz, CA (May 15, 2026) – A hit-and-run crash involving a stolen vehicle left at least one person hurt on Thursday, May 14, near the intersection of Ocean Street and Washburn Avenue in Santa Cruz, not far from a McDonald’s restaurant.
The incident began around 8:02 PM when a reporting party called in a white Toyota Camry that was swerving across multiple lanes. The caller said she was directly behind the vehicle as it moved erratically. Debris was reported in the roadway, and the Camry eventually came to a stop on the right side of the road.
Two vehicles were involved in the crash, which was confirmed as a hit-and-run with injuries. The white Toyota Camry was later identified as a stolen vehicle, reported stolen in March 2025, according to San Jose police records. Officers sought to contact a witness at a separate address connected to the stolen vehicle.
No additional details about the victim’s condition have been confirmed at this time. Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and further information will be released as it becomes available.
We are thinking of those hurt as they receive medical care.
What Happens When a Stolen Vehicle Is Involved in a Crash in California?
When a stolen vehicle is involved in a crash in California, the incident typically triggers two separate lines of investigation, one for the collision itself and one for the theft. Officers at the scene work to gather evidence from both, which can include vehicle identification, surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and witness accounts. The fact that a vehicle was stolen often expands the number of agencies involved in the follow-up.
In Santa Cruz County, as in most of California, a hit-and-run involving a stolen car can result in multiple charges against the responsible party once identified. Reckless driving before a crash is also factored into how the incident is classified. Records from the original theft report, including when and where the vehicle was taken, can help investigators trace the vehicle’s movements and identify who was behind the wheel at the time of the collision.
