San Jose, CA (May 3, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash involving seven vehicles late Sunday night in San Jose resulted in several people being transported to the hospital.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. on southbound State Route 87 near Curtner Avenue. When officers arrived, they determined the incident actually involved three separate collisions that occurred in close proximity.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and evaluated multiple people for injuries. Several individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities reported that the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, though the exact conditions of those involved have not been fully released.
Due to the severity of the crash scene, all southbound traffic was diverted off the highway at Curtner Avenue. The roadway remained impacted for approximately two hours as crews worked to assist victims, investigate the crashes, and clear the vehicles.
Officials stated that alcohol and drug impairment do not appear to be factors in the incident.
The crashes remain under investigation.
We wish a full recovery to those injured.
How Do Multi-Vehicle Crashes Escalate Into Chain-Reaction Collisions?
Multi-vehicle crashes often begin with a single incident but can quickly escalate into a chain reaction, especially on busy highways. When one collision occurs, drivers behind may not have enough time or space to stop, leading to additional impacts.
At highway speeds, even a minor delay in reaction time can result in another crash. Congested traffic, sudden braking, and limited visibility at night can all increase the risk of multiple collisions happening within seconds of each other.
In cases like this, what appears to be one crash may actually involve several separate impacts, complicating emergency response and traffic management. Staying alert, maintaining safe following distances, and adjusting speed based on conditions can help reduce the likelihood of chain-reaction crashes.
