San Luis Obispo County, CA (May 12, 2026) – One man was killed, and two others were injured after a single-vehicle crash Sunday evening in an unincorporated area of northern San Luis Obispo County.
Emergency units responded around 7:19 p.m. to Nacimiento Lake Dr near Frazier Rd following reports of a crash involving a Chevrolet Camaro. Officials said 44-year-old Joseph Mitchell Pate was driving westbound at an unknown speed when the vehicle left the roadway for reasons that remain unconfirmed.
The car reportedly veered off the north side of the road before the driver turned and overcorrected. The vehicle then crossed both lanes of traffic and struck a tree south of the roadway. A 48-year-old man seated in the back was pronounced dead at the scene.
A front-seat passenger, identified as 41-year-old Mack Garcia, suffered minor injuries. Pate sustained major injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was also placed under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The identity of the deceased passenger will be released after family notification.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Investigators Typically Examine After a Single-Vehicle Crash
Single-vehicle crashes often require investigators to reconstruct the vehicle’s movement leading up to the point of impact. This can include reviewing the roadway layout, tire marks, and the car’s final resting position.
Speed is also a key factor examined in many cases, along with steering inputs that may indicate overcorrection or loss of control. In rural roadway environments, curves, visibility, and roadside obstacles such as trees can significantly influence crash outcomes.
In addition to physical evidence, investigators may review witness statements and any available data from the vehicle. Medical findings and passenger accounts can also help clarify how the crash unfolded in the moments before impact.
