What Factors Are Involved in Left-Turn Crashes on Highways?
Left-turn crashes on highways often happen when a driver misjudges the speed or distance of oncoming traffic. These situations can develop quickly, especially on roads where vehicles travel at higher speeds.
Visibility can also affect how safely a turn is made. Curves in the road, large vehicles, or roadside features may block a clear view of approaching traffic. When visibility is limited, it becomes harder to identify safe gaps for turning.
Traffic flow and timing are additional considerations. Drivers must wait for a safe opening before crossing or merging into another lane. When that timing is off, the risk of a collision increases, particularly at intersections without traffic signals.
